Experts + Evidence Affirm Mammograms Remain the Gold Standard
Proven Screening Tool Helps Detect Breast Cancer Sooner
From AI-assisted medical procedures to tailored genetic testing and novel therapies, innovations in the health care sector are happening at a fast clip. That includes ever-expanding capabilities for finding and treating cancer. The oncology field is on the front lines of promising progress, including for breast cancer where much is changing to improve women’s outcomes and quality of life. Amid the advances, one practice remains the gold standard of care. Medical experts and decades of evidence affirm that mammograms are the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer sooner and saving more women’s lives from the disease.
According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, annual mammograms in women 40-79 have supported a reduction in the mortality rate by more than 40%. To help ensure more women receive their recommended screenings, we encourage all patients to talk with their doctors about their breast cancer risk by the age of 25. These conversations can help women determine whether they should receive a mammogram before 40, receive supplemental imaging or undergo more frequent screening. For individuals of average risk, yearly mammograms should start at 40. Women with dense breasts—now indicated and categorized on mammogram reports—should visit with their providers about the need for additional testing, such as breast ultrasounds.
Whether supposed at-home blood detection tests or unique imaging tools, women often come to me and ask, “Do I really have to get my annual mammogram?” My answer, without hesitation, is yes. There’s a reason insurance companies are required to cover yearly mammograms for women 40 and older. They’re effective and proven in helping save women’s lives from breast cancer. Mammograms are also quick, easy and with new conveniences like SmartCurve paddles, available at The Breast Center at CARTI, more comfortable than ever. Schedule your appointment at 501-537-MAMO.
