The convenience and lower price of UA Little Rock allowed me to experiment with different classes and figure out who I was. I was able to wait tables at the legendary Sir Loin’s Inn and put myself through UA Little Rock with no student debt.
I never had formal art classes until I went to UA Little Rock. I loved music just as much as art, but quickly learned I had no real talent in music. I shifted from majoring in confusion, to majoring in art. The first couple of years I focused on drawing and painting fundamentals. Even in my sculpture today, I still use concepts I learned in every one of those classes, especially a sense of strong, effective design and composition.
UA Little Rock is all about the student/teacher relationships. When I had my first body of paintings completed, I asked my design teacher, Eric Mantle, to come give me a critique. I respected his aesthetic, his opinion, and I knew he would be honest with me. This was five years after I finished UA Little Rock. He gladly came to help me without hesitation.
Kevin’s statue of the legendary Johnny Cash was unveiled in Statuary Hall in the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C. in September. Cash will be the second Arkansan to be recognized with a statue on Capitol Hill this year after civil rights leader Daisy Bates was honored in May.
