Bridge Team Leader – Bridge Rehabilitation & Load Rating
DAY AT WORK
My work can involve anything from reviewing plans and designs to mentoring team members on software or new engineering concepts. Some days, I’m in the field assessing bridges to determine necessary repairs. Most of my time is spent balancing the efficient, high-quality design of multiple projects, ranging from load ratings and bridge rehabilitation to scour remediation. The dynamic nature of my work keeps it both challenging and rewarding.
BEGINNING INTERESTS
Math and science were always my strongest subjects and the ones I enjoyed the most. With a father who was an actuary and a mother who was an accountant, I knew early on that math would play a central role in my career.
LOVE the Work
No two projects are ever the same. Whether I’m designing a new structure or adapting an existing bridge to accommodate new loads, each has its own complexities. I love the problem-solving aspect of engineering – sometimes the best solution is straightforward, while other times it requires a fresh perspective and an innovative approach. Either way, the process is always engaging and exciting.
SURPRISING BUT TRUE
There’s a reason the conversation has expanded from STEM careers to now incorporating the arts through STEAM. Even in highly technical fields, there is so much room for creativity. In my work with existing infrastructure, for example, creativity is essential. I have to understand all the limitations and constraints of a project then develop creative solutions within those boundaries. It’s a balance of logic and imagination.
