Little Rock Water Reclamation Authority

Director of Environmental Affairs

DAY AT WORK

My position covers a wide variety of topics, which keeps things interesting.  I might start my day in the Port of Little Rock meeting the Chamber of Commerce and a potential new industry. Then end the day in my office in SW Little Rock where I meet with the other senior leaders at the utility to discuss policy changes and implementation strategies.

BEGINNING INTERESTS

In college, I worked in a Whole Effluent Toxicity laboratory and our largest clients were wastewater utilities.  I absolutely loved that job.  So, when I graduated, I applied for a wastewater utility and got a job working in the lab.

CAREER EVOLUTION

I have been in a STEAM related role for my entire career.  I worked in a lab as an Analyst or Supervisor for 10 years before moving to my current position of Director.  Now, I focus on big picture items like regulatory compliance, industrial user relations, and economic development.

LOVE THE WORK

I love that my job is mentally stimulating. With each challenge comes the opportunity to solve problems by relying on my understanding of chemical and biological processes. I also love interpreting and enforcing contracts, permits, and ordinances.

SURPRISING BUT TRUE
Education gives you the basic understanding of the principles, but with most positions, you learn more on the job than you ever did in school.

ADVICE

Don’t be afraid to be the only woman in the room. If space isn’t made for you, make space for yourself. Advocate for yourself and your skills – it might feel weird and arrogant, but it might be the difference in getting an opportunity and being overlooked. If you’re skilled at the job, then talented leaders will recognize that.  Those are the leaders I want to work for.
