The fanfare of a mint julep is undeniable. Equal parts refinement + fun and always refreshing, it seemed most appropriate for our time together with Drew and Brian Benham at Marlsgate Plantation. This delightful couple blends community service into work and family time. They jokingly jest, “We don’t do things like anyone else,” and that means, this year’s Southern Silks Stakes will be one to remember.
“No matter the situation, with a little creativity and a strong tribe, anything is possible.” Drew explains this harkens back to their own wedding, when an unexpected fire caused the best-laid plan to go awry. “With the help of friends and family, we had a wonderful wedding in the yard of a family friend with good food, music, and a bonfire. It was better than we could have imagined.” They’ve been married since 2012 and enjoy the adventures of parenthood with two children, Fox and Elliot. “We love being with our families and close to nature. Giving back is an important part of supporting our community.” Drew is an attorney at Gill Ragon Owen, P.A. and Brian serves as an Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield Director. They both work to improve the lives of fellow Arkansans. Drew was introduced to Methodist Family Health through the firm’s support of the organization. The values + vision resonated with the couple. “Methodist Family Health’s focus and approach on mental and behavioral issues through a variety of programs, meets kids and families where they are to impact their lives for the better. As parents in a state with high mental health issues for children and teenagers, we are passionate about helping kids to become stable, healthy adults.”
For more than a century, Methodist Family Health has provided support to children in Arkansas. Established as an orphanage in 1899 by the state’s Methodist community, Methodist Family Health continues to evolve to meet the needs of families. The organization offers programs and services for families and children struggling with behavioral, emotional and psychiatric health issues. These residential treatment centers + counseling clinics encourage wellness practices that all families can embrace. Drew and Brian discovered and utilize the MFH Teaching-Family Treatment Model. “We learned about a problem-solving strategy called ‘SODAS’ – Situation, Options, Disadvantages, Advantages, Solution. We’ve used this model with our children to help them make good decisions.”
Proceeds from Southern Silks Stakes support the mission of Methodist Family Health Foundation. In addition to fabulous faux races and festive fare, this year’s special appeal will provide Christmas gifts for children in the care of Methodist Family Health. “We want to make the holidays special for as many children as possible.” Drew and Brian look forward to celebrating with business and civic leaders committed to the future of Arkansas. “We have gotten to know a lot of great people and local businesses. We enjoy knowing that the proceeds positively affect the mental and behavioral health of those in need.” And the winners are the children and families throughout Arkansas.
