Arkansan of the Year celebrates distinguished business and civic leaders who champion a more equitable future for all Arkansans. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be honored by Easterseals Arkansas for her commitment to the education of all students.
Easterseals Arkansas offers programs that help individuals live longer, healthier and more independent lives. From child development centers to physical rehabilitation and job training – the organization provides a variety of services that develop personal potential. It has pioneered these efforts since 1944; clients have utilized these resources to be more self-reliant and achieve their dreams. “Access to these life-changing services is at the heart of Easterseals Arkansas to encourage the highest level of independence,” Director of Marketing & Public Relations Jillian Jacuzzi explains. She notes that education is a key component in this unique curriculum.
The Easterseals Arkansas Academy is an accredited private school designed for students with developmental disabilities. The most recent initiative includes an expansion to accommodate more families. “Demand for the Academy has soared in recent years. This project increases capacity from 75 students to more than 220 students,” CEO Ron Ekstrand shares. He notes accessibility is fundamental to the organization’s mission fulfillment work. “It brings our academy to our main campus. This move enhances collaboration and simplifies access to essential therapy, nursing and support services for students.”
With help from Governor Sanders, Easterseals Arkansas secured construction of the new Easterseals Academy. The academy received funding from the State of Arkansas Restricted Reserve and the Arkansas LEARNS Act expanding educational opportunities for families including those with special needs students. “Every student in Arkansas deserves a quality education. That’s why I signed Arkansas LEARNS and created the Education Freedom Account program to help more kids attend the school of their choice, including Easterseals,” explains Governor Sanders.
For nearly four decades, Easterseals Arkansas has recognized fellow Arkansans who share this vision. Ron adds, “Her recognition continues a family legacy – her father, Governor Mike Huckabee received the award during his tenure, and, her mother, Janet Huckabee was honored.” These most notable individuals act as Easterseals Arkansas ambassadors throughout the state. “By recognizing these leaders, we bring attention to critical issues, policies, and programs that help Arkansans with disabilities.”
Proceeds from Arkansan of the Year support the Easterseals Arkansas continuum of services as the organization continues to evolve. “For 80 years, Easterseals Arkansas has provided exceptional services to empower children and adults with disabilities to live, learn, work and play in their communities,” Jillian elaborates. “Easterseals Arkansas is proud to recognize Governor Sanders as the 2025 Arkansan of the Year, for her commitment to enhancing the state through her time, talent and resources.”
