THE Winthrop P Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences provides hope and healing for families who experience the devasting effects of a cancer diagnosis. Each year, Gala for Life celebrates the mission fulfillment work of the Cancer Institute and the support that makes it possible. It’s a culmination of civic leadership that continues to move cancer conservations from the institution into the lives of fellow Arkansans. And there’s a space for every individual to contribute. From the Cancer Institute Board of Advisors to the Auxiliary and the Envoys – time, energy, enthusiasm and fiduciary support is a critical component to the wellness of our state.
Through their steadfast commitment, Tisha Gribble and Hatim Smouni represent not only the power of one, but the transformative power of community. In preparation for Gala for Life and an exciting chapter for the Cancer Institute – including the pursuit to be the first NCI-designated center in Arkansas – they share insight + inspiration.
Tisha’s heart for service coupled with professional panache make her an ideal ambassador for the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. Her sense of adventure is reflected in a tenure as a vivacious volunteer – first with Trinity United Methodist Church Vacation Bible School – and throughout the years with many beloved organizations in Central Arkansas. “I became involved with Junior League of Little Rock and made connections in the community. I found that working with nonprofit organizations was rewarding.”
This kind of collaboration cultivates amazing + measurable results. For more than a decade, Tisha has worked on behalf of the Arkansas Rice Federation promoting the cultural and economic significance of the rice industry in the state. “I live, work and play in Little Rock. I want to be sure I’m doing my part to support the community. Volunteering is a way to stay connected.”
INTRODUCTION
Tisha was initially introduced to Auxiliary through the annual Partners Card initiative. It’s a program with local retailers + restauranteurs that offers discounts with the purchase of a Partners Card. “It was right around the time my dear friend Stacy Duckett was receiving treatment at the Cancer Institute for brain cancer. Because of this, I was very interested in learning more about it.”
THE WHY
She realizes the research, clinical trials and studies at the Cancer Institute are critical components for continued success. “Getting the NCI designation will open up more avenues for treatment and care.” In her leadership role, Tisha notes an unexpected obstacle. “Many people are not fully aware of the wonderful things happening here. I have been able to see and share firsthand the kind of innovations that make the Cancer Institute the premier cancer treatment facility.”
GALA HIGHLIGHTS
Tisha is looking forward to an event that celebrates the institution’s legacy as well as a bright future for all Arkansans. “This year, Natalie and Win Rockefeller are chairing and it’s pretty cool that the Cancer Institute is named for Win’s dad.”
Hatim Smouni moved to Arkansas to attend the University of Central Arkansas. After spending his childhood in Morocco, he established a family and career in Little Rock. “Growing up in Casablanca with a population of almost 5 million people – I love Little Rock because while it feels like a small town, it has big city amenities. I also love the generosity of families that care about this area.” It was during his time at UCA that Hatim experienced the power of volunteerism. “I was part of a Habitat for Humanity house that was being built; I was so hooked by the selfless act of giving away time and talent.”
INTRODUCTION
Hatim joined the Envoys during its inaugural year in 2009. This young professionals auxiliary group helps promote + support the institution and all of the nuances across various sectors: physicians, scientists, programming, research, treatments and more. “We worked to make sure that the group not only took off, but also made meaningful initiatives and funded well-deserved research programs.” As a member, he learned + shared insight with the community and constituents. “It is fascinating to hear from researchers and physicians. The high standards for cancer prevention, clinical services, and research make the Cancer Institute a hidden jewel in the state. The people that work inside those walls are heroes for the sacrifice they make while fighting against cancer and finding cures.”
THE WHY
He believes the impact that every individual can make with the Cancer Institute is unparalleled. “Unlike national and international cancer research foundations, all the money stays in Arkansas. We need the support to achieve the NCI designation which is the highest federal rating a cancer center can achieve and no other center in Arkansas is actively pursuing it.” Hatim is grateful for the knowledge and experience that he has gained during his tenure of service. “I learned so much about what goes on in the big cancer building; I feel like I benefit more from volunteering for UAMS than what I do to help them. I also learned how cancer can affect people differently and in a way each person has a different experience and treatment process.”
GALA HIGHLIGHTS
Hatim notes with great anticipation that Natalie and Win Rockefeller will certainly bring some surprises throughout the evening. “I don’t expect anything less than a record-breaking event in so many ways. Natalie is going to push the envelope and make it a fun and celebratory event with grace and style.”
