AMFA Members can explore AMFA’s newest exhibition Architects of Being: Louise Nevelson and Esphyr Slobodkina during an exclusive preview event before the exhibition opens to the public on October 3, 2025.
This exhibition celebrates the constructive impulses of two artists who orbited each other in the midcentury. Setting out in the 1930s, Nevelson and Slobodkina worked against the grain of popular American art to become abstract artists, transforming everything they touched. Assemblage is a playful throughline in the exhibition. To navigate the midcentury American art world, they also built themselves—as Eastern European Jewish immigrants, working women, and creative pioneers. In addition to their artworks—which reveal the artists as fellow travelers in the legacy of cubism, surrealism, and constructivism—the exhibition will showcase the artists’ clothing as self-fashioning.
