The Little Rock Zoo invites you to join in the global project known as the The Great Backyard Bird Count. Started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real time. As members of our ecosystems, birds play many roles, including as predators, pollinators, scavengers, seed dispersers, seed predators, and ecosystem engineers. Whether you’re participating at home or at the Zoo, there are many ways to help local birds. Pick which of these works best for you and your family to be mindful stewards of nature:
1. Feed Responsibly: Provide nourishment through bird feeders stocked with a variety of seeds specific to your area. Opt for sustainable, locally-sourced birdseed to support both the birds and the environment.
2. Create Safe Havens: Design your garden to be bird-friendly by incorporating Educate and Inspire: Share your passion for birds with friends and family. By spreading awareness, we can inspire a collective commitment to conserving the diverse array of bird species that enrich our lives.
