DEBBIE GROOMS
Taking a project from zero to success is no small feat. Director of Development Debbie Grooms understands this better than most and has created a sustainable fundraising infrastructure for Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled, Inc. She initially joined the nonprofit organization sector as a second career. Her enthusiasm and dedication to the community remain unwavering. Melody Suggs, Arkansas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals member and past president, remembers meeting Debbie. “She pretty much showed us all how it’s done when she developed the development program at AEDD,” Melody explains. “Her focus on creating – and loving on – an auxiliary group of volunteers was brilliant and has paid off in so many ways.” Melody credits this ingenuity as a key strategy for successful fundraising – specifically Hawgs for a Cause and Curtain Call.
The organization provides programs and resources that empower individuals to gain independence and improve the quality of life. Community-based services include personal development, community inclusion and contributions to society. The AEDD Auxiliary makes this mission fulfillment work possible; Debbie established this group that continues to impress. CEO & Executive Director Georganna Huddleston elaborates. “She organized our fundraising team from the ground up. It was no easy task, but Debbie has always gone above and beyond to ensure her duties were completed to the absolute best of her ability.” Throughout her tenure, Debbie’s leadership of campaigns has funded facility improvements – playgrounds, a children’s library and pavilion – as well as necessary technology for the adult skills training center.
Debbie believes friendships make the work even more meaningful. This adds s colorful and important component. “I love all of the people I have met who are so giving and compassionate. You never really know what inspires someone to give until you talk to them and hear their story. There are so many reasons I am inspired to work and serve at AEDD. We are here a short amount of time and I like knowing I can leave a legacy of having made life better for someone else.”
