There is something kismet about youth helping youth. The North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council brings these intrinsic values into action, creating an organization that improves communities. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkansas & North Louisiana Development Director Emily Piechocki explains, “This council offers a unique opportunity for hundreds of students to contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually while raising substantial funds for numerous nonprofit organizations.”
This work includes a monthly cooking-baking session at Ronald McDonald House as well as supporting Chocolate Fantasy Ball. Emily is quick to note, “It’s impossible to encapsulate everything the council does.” This youth group is involved with Blossoms Nursing Home, the North Little Rock Therapeutic Recreation Center and a partnership with Hunger Heroes. “The members develop a deep appreciation for civic engagement, teamwork and the power of collection action.”
North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council reflects the goals and objectives of America’s Promise providing community service opportunities for youth that also introduce a variety of nonprofit organizations such as Boys & Girls Club, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, CareLink, Museum of Discovery, Laman Library and Our House. Last year the council contributed 6,000 hours of service, recognizing 27 members with the Presidential Service Award for 100+ hours. Six seniors received $1,500 service scholarships made possible by the Coca Cola Company, Mid-South Promise Mini-Grants and the North Little Rock School District. “Their dedication to volunteerism has not only benefited the organizations, but it has also instilled a sense of civic responsibility in the youth who participate,” Emily reflects. “These collective efforts have undoubtedly strengthened the fabric of their community, setting an inspiring example.”
