Each year, the Finest Gala celebrates the achievements of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as well as the Finest honorees. These young professionals represent the best + brightest in Central Arkansas – advocating for the foundation and generating invaluable support for life-saving research. Last year, Mary Nell McBryde received the Todd Miles Award for her fundraising efforts. The award remembers Todd, who lost his battle with cystic fibrosis at 40 years old. It’s an evening of emotion and jubilation; for Mary Nell – it’s also a bit of friendly competition.
Mary Nell was initially introduced to the health risks of cystic fibrosis through her friend whose baby was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. “Honestly, I had heard of cystic fibrosis, but didn’t know a lot about it. When we saw the gala was coming, a group of us went to it.” It was the inaugural reimagined Finest Gala; “There were 10 of us that year, and Cat Sims broke the state record. The next year, we had 10 tables of family and friends. We decided we could also do that and continue to break it year after year.” Her friend Andrew Crone was the 2022 Todd Miles Award recipient and then Mary Nell. “I love a good competition; we hope this tradition continues.”
This Arkansas native witnessed the power of philanthropy throughout her childhood. “My mom was a principal, so I was constantly around school fundraisers. It was impactful – seeing teachers and staff make sure kids were truly taken care of.” She appreciates knowing her work with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is measurable. She notes a highlight of the gala is celebrating with families affected by the disease and recognizing the new treatments available that improve lives. “You can truly hear the hope and joy in their voices. I’ve never been a part of a cause where we are able to see a little more light at the end of the tunnel each and every year.”Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that predominantly affects the lungs, pancreas and digestive system – causing serious infections and complications. Established in 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation supports innovative research and medical developments that treat the disease, and as a result, the life expectancy of patients has increased dramatically. “Today, innovative therapies developed by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation are transforming the lives of thousands of people with CF,” Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Senior Development Director Bethany Howell elaborates. “Continued support through the Finest Honorees, like Mary Nell, will ensure we have the resources to continue our fight for a cure.”
The McBryde family is invested in the welfare of fellow Arkansans and making the world a better place. “If we continue to build on the good that has been done for us, then we will make our community better for our next generation. It’s fun to see my sons’ excitement to give back in their own ways.” She notes a sense of urgency that aligns the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “Research and treatments mean cystic fibrosis patients experience improved quality of life. That is my ultimate motivation.”
