In 2011, Easterseals Arkansas introduced the A.R.T. (Artistic Realization Technologies) Program. This innovative approach to creative expression enables clients to redefine and discover new possibilities. Working with “trackers” – these individuals bring stories to life on canvas, even if they cannot physically hold a brush. Ashley  Brockinton and Susan Tillemans are trained facilitators that help make the magic happen. The Easterseals Arkansas Annual Art & Soul features these creations; proceeds from the evening support Easterseals Arkansas and related resources helping clients live longer, healthier, more independent lives.

As an instructor at Easterseals Arkansas Adult Center for Wellness & Training, Susan helps an artist realize an invaluable personal resource. “The program validates people who normally would not experience the feeling of a job well done. The expression alone gives a voice to the voiceless.” She insists no training is necessary to cultivate connections with the artists; the process is seamless. “Everything is done with a chart for each available tool, color, and texture! The only thing you need is the ability to establish asking yes and no questions for understanding, and a heart for communication and patience.”

Ashley is the current Volunteer Coordinator of the A.R.T. program. She works in the classroom to create an inclusive and welcoming space that supports the artist and volunteers. The process is a powerful experience for everyone. “The artist would carefully watch as the tracker held up a brush or mixed a color, then give a subtle nod or shake of the head to guide the process. Every decision, from color to stroke placement, was theirs. It was a beautiful reminder that communication doesn’t always need words, and that with just a few gestures, someone can express a full artistic vision.” It’s an accomplishment of so much more than finished artwork. Susan elaborates, “I believe the success of this program speaks for itself when the community comes together and sees some pretty amazing works of art. And when they see the artist, the question is always how did they do that?” This is at the heart of Art & Soul – it opens doors not just for the artists but for everyone.
