Defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter – Pi has captured the imagination of mathematicians, scientists, students and even bakers for centuries. This simple ratio is anything but ordinary and it appears everywhere: seemingly irrational yet undeniable. Like a perfect pizza, delicious donut or crumbly cookie that are just so yummy, Pi can mystify the mind + it goes on forever. What better way to celebrate something that remains in constant solidarity despite the changing times … with a neighborhood gathering. SoMa 501 Executive Director Elizabeth Michael shares insight and how the Math on Main partnership with UA Little Rock fosters community, creative and kinetic knowledge of all things curious.

Brought to life by the Simons Foundation Infinite Sums Program, Math on Main reveals the practicality of math in everyday experiences. It includes three events throughout the year: Pi Day, Infinity Day and Fibonacci Day. Elizabeth notes that the Pi Day festivities are family-friendly and guaranteed to impress. From the Bubble Bust, offering an opportunity to measure and compare the actual size of bubbles, to music that breaks down rhythm into fractions, “Pi Day, and all of Math on Main, will inspire even the most discerning visitors.” Elizabeth elaborates, “We’re encouraging them to discover connections between math, movement and creativity.” Another highlight of Math on Main is free food. During Pi Day, local eateries will feature circular snacks including pizza, empanadas, bagels and more. “We want to reveal the beauty of math in ordinary, accessible ways and show that math is everywhere for everyone.”

Described as part historic + part hipster heaven, South Main – SoMa – continues to flourish as a neighborhood that blends urban chicness with classic community. The revitalization of this area between Interstate 630 and Roosevelt Road reflects an eclectic collection of people + personality with lots of pizazz. It’s recognized as part of the Main Street America Accredited Program which reflects an unwavering commitment to shared prosperity, resilient communities and quality of life. “We’re all about inclusion, collaboration and sustainability. Math on Main aligns with these values and encourages people to rediscover the magic of math.”
