Brent Morgan remembers his father’s quadruple bypass surgery. “I was 12 years old, and it was the first time I saw my dad in peril. That experience changed our family’s lifestyle and made heart health a priority.” More than 35 years later, Melissa and Brent Morgan have joined the American Heart Association as a relentless force for a world filled with longer, healthier lives. The couple will welcome friends and families to the Central Arkansas Heart Ball next month.
“The mission of the American Heart Association speaks for itself,” Brent realizes that food insecurity creates obstacles for many families. “Good nutrition is so important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I’m not always the best person to live that mission, but those that don’t have the option or the knowledge to make good choices, that’s an area where Arkansas can improve so much.” Making wellness education and opportunities accessible is a critical component at the heart of the AHA mission; the couple is impressed by the change the organization effects throughout the state. Melissa elaborates, “Our local American Heart Association works closely with individuals and companies to reach specific needs and locations, so dollars truly funnel right back into our community.”
Each year, the Central Arkansas Heart Ball generates support for statewide resources including Libraries with Heart. In partnership with local libraries, residents can track blood pressure and learn more about risks + prevention in a trusted community space. Melissa explains, “Heart health touches all of us or someone we know. The American Heart Association impacts everyone in the world, which certainly aligns with our values.” As Bank OZK President of Commercial Banking South Arkansas, Brent notes his civic leadership blends well with the bank’s roots across the Natural State. Throughout her childhood in Magnolia, Melissa experienced the power of volunteerism through her church and other local initiatives. “I loved seeing the results of my efforts.” Now, she and Brent make sure every volunteer hour counts. “We’re focused on our committee members and keeping them motivated to make this the most successful Heart Ball yet.”
Brent explains the evening’s theme Hearts of Gold represents everyone who supports the American Heart Association. “This includes volunteers, sponsors, guests and all those working on this wonderful event.” He’s especially looking forward to the formal presentation of the Sweethearts; daughter Mallory is participating this year. The program provides a unique opportunity for high school sophomores to participate in a comprehensive curriculum designed to teach heart-healthy habits and cultivate civic responsibility. “It’s definitely a proud dad moment. By then – we can sit back, enjoy ourselves, and soak it all in.” Melissa is quick to reiterate the purpose of celebration. “The American Heart Association works to advance health and hope for everyone, everywhere – equity, knowledge, discovery and advocacy for every person in our community. That’s very powerful.”
“To me, there are a lot of people in the community showing Hearts of Gold and that will be seen among the hundreds of people that make this event possible.” – Brent Morgan
