Jarrod Johnson remembers a childhood filled with adventures. “We spent as much time as we could outside. It was before cell phones and internet; we made our own fun.” He notes that imagination was a great contender. “Making something out of what might appear to be nothing is what made – and still makes – things fun for me!” This offered ample opportunity to connect with the natural world. His grandfather’s farm is where he learned about horses and helped work crops + livestock. “I’ve always loved animals.”
Jarrod lives with his partner Alex in the heart of Hillcrest, but he insists all the neighborhoods in Little Rock have a vibe. “I love how lively each one is.” If you know Jarrod, it’s not a surprise – he is often touted the city’s “unofficial tour guide” and realizes the transformative power of community. He shares an undeniable enthusiasm for the Natural State that make him an ideal ambassador for the Little Rock Zoo.
As Wild Wines Chairman, Jarrod will welcome friends and patrons to the Little Rock Zoo for an evening of fanfare and fellowship. “It’s the most unique food and wine festival in Arkansas. You can’t find another one like it.” With more than 200 wines provided by O’Looney’s Wine & Liquor, guests will enjoy a curated selection along with samplings from local restaurants and lots of live entertainment. “Our animal ambassadors are always a favorite and there are a couple of surprises I don’t want to spoil just yet. The zoo isn’t just for kids.” Director Susan Altrui adds, “It’s the perfect blend of fun and philanthropy.”
Proceeds support the Arkansas Zoological Foundation and continued beautification of the zoo. “They are constantly looking at ways to improve the exhibits. Not just for the visitors, but for the animals that live there,” Jarrod elaborates and notes conservation is also a critical component of the mission fulfillment work. “Our zoo is part of a global breeding program. A lot of animals are so threatened and critically endangered that zoos, like ours, help keep these species alive so younger generations can learn to protect them, too.”
Wild Wines combines the legacy of the Little Rock Zoo with innovative opportunities to cultivate community and bring awareness to its pivotal role in the future of wildlife. “My parents taught us that we need to play an active role in our community.” It’s one of the things Jarrod appreciates most about Central Arkansas. “Cities and people working together to make things better.” For Jarrod, that translates into education and preservation of some of our most beloved counterparts. “From dogs, to elephants, and even the not so cuddly ones like spiders, snakes and alligators – all animals have a very specific place in this world that we all share. Everyone, including us as humans, plays a role in the circle of life.”
